Compliance

Why compliance is not a luxury, but a necessity

The art of following rules with style!

You can ignore many things in life. The email with the subject "Urgent!", the sound of a dripping kitchen tap or a call from an unknown call center. But what you shouldn't ignore is compliance. Because while a dripping tap only strains the water meter, a lack of compliance strains either the company budget or personal freedom.

Compliance: More than just following the rules

Anyone who thinks of compliance as dusty legal texts and endless regulations is mistaken. In fact, it is an art form - the art of elegantly navigating a dense web of laws, guidelines and ethical principles. It's not just about avoiding violations, but also about reputation, trust and, yes, a certain aplomb in the business arena.

Why compliance is indispensable!

Imagine this: An artificial intelligence (AI) decides on credit applications. Without clear AI guidelines, it could make its decisions based on criteria that are somewhere between arbitrary and worrying. This is precisely why governance and risk and compliance (GRC) mechanisms are in place to ensure that no one is fobbed off with an incomprehensible "no".

The role of the Compliance Officer and AI Officer

Experts are needed to ensure that everyone is not suddenly unsure: the Compliance Officer for general compliance and the AI Officer who monitors the ethical and legal handling of AI. Because while governance and control always form the framework, it is their job to fill this framework with well thought-out measures. And yes, they don't necessarily wear black robes, but they certainly have a certain authority.

External data protection officer: the invisible hero

Another figurehead of good compliance is the external data protection officer (DPO). While others are busy with creative marketing strategies, they ensure that data protection laws are not trampled underfoot. You can think of them as a kind of company navigator who navigates the rough terrain of the GDPR and other regulations. Anyone who has managed to avoid a breach will probably be eternally grateful.

The EU AI Act: not a law, but a milestone

Legislators are not sleeping either. The EU AI Act is currently an attempt to steer artificial intelligence in an orderly direction across Europe. Sounds ambitious - and it is. But who would have thought that in 2024 we would no longer just have to talk about tax returns, but also about AI regulations?

Conclusion: Compliance as an attitude

Some companies see compliance as an annoying evil. Others see it as an opportunity to create trust and manage risks wisely. The truth? As is so often the case, it lies somewhere in between. But one thing is certain: without it, it can be expensive. Or unpleasant. Or both.

So: embrace compliance or ignore it? The answer should be clear.
