First it was supposed to organize our fridge, then control our cars and now - well - it has to abide by rules. Because even machines need to behave, and that's exactly what AI guidelines are for. A fine thing that prevents algorithms from behaving like a bad-tempered bouncer.
Because otherwise machines do what they want.
Without clear AI guidelines, artificial intelligence could come up with strange ideas. For example, sorting applicants by their favorite color or chatbots that suddenly send love letters. Charming, but not necessarily effective. That's why these sets of rules ensure that AI remains transparent, fair and safe. Or at least doesn't go completely crazy.
Firstly: transparency. Users should understand whether they are talking to a human or an AI. So if you're on the customer hotline and wonder why the person you're talking to never gets tired - it could be an AI. Secondly: fairness. No discrimination, no hidden prejudices. Thirdly: security. Because an AI that changes credit limits uncontrollably or suddenly steers self-driving cars creatively would be - shall we say - suboptimal. Especially for an AI officer who has to monitor compliance with these guidelines.
It all sounds wonderful, but how consistently are AI guidelines actually implemented? In practice, they often resemble a diet plan: Perfect on paper, but then reality comes along with a slice of chocolate cake. Companies implement them - somehow. But often there is a lack of control, a lack of specialists or a simple willingness to admit that their own AI is perhaps not quite as objective as they thought. The EU AI Act sets standards here and forces companies to take a closer look.
The idea is brilliant: AI should behave and not get up to mischief. But as is so often the case, it needs more than just fine words - it needs implementation. Companies that use AI should ask themselves: have our AI guidelines really been thought through or are they just nicely worded declarations of intent? Because in the end, AI without rules is like a drummer without a sense of rhythm - loud, uncontrolled and exhausting for everyone involved. Artificial intelligence AI can revolutionize companies - but only if it plays by the rules.
