Miracle machine or regulatory nightmare?

The European Union has clearly categorized AI risks in the EU AI Act:

  • Unacceptable risk:
    AI systems that pose a serious threat to fundamental rights, security or democracy are prohibited, e.g. social scoring, manipulative AI or comprehensive facial recognition in public spaces

  • High risk:
    AI applications that influence critical decisions or sensitive areas are only permitted under strict conditions, e.g. AI in medicine, automated applicant selection or AI-supported credit checks.

  • Limited risk:
    AI systems that pose few direct risks but require transparency must be clearly recognizable as AI, e.g. chatbots, deepfakes or content recommendation systems.

  • Minimal risk:
    AI applications with little or no risk are free to use, e.g. spam filters, spell checkers or voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa.


Companies must therefore thoroughly analyze their AI systems and ensure that they comply with regulatory requirements. Faulty or insufficiently tested AI can not only have immense economic consequences, but can also cause considerable reputational damage.

Innovation vs. regulation: a balancing act

Impact on companies and citizens

Overly strict regulations could jeopardize Europe's innovative strength. Start-ups and SMEs could be jeopardized by high compliance-requirements, while tech giants with huge legal departments find it easier to overcome these challenges.

On the other hand, a lack of regulation could lead to uncontrolled growth: Unethical AI applications that violate privacy or reinforce discriminatory patterns would be the result. A balanced approach is therefore essential.

Companies that use AI responsibly create a clear competitive advantage: trust. Customers and investors prefer companies that use AI transparently and are committed to ethical principles. Therefore, ethical AI guidelines and GRC strategies are not only a regulatory necessity, but also a business advantage.
